4th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA)

The Philippines is joining the 4th IOAA in Beijing, China on Sept. 12-21, 2010.  All the best to the Philippine team!

Quoting Dr. Armando Lee’s message:

The Philippines for the first time is participating in the 4th IOAA this week and over the weekend. The IOAA is the equivalent of the Olympics when it comes to Astronomy and Astrophysics. The Philippine team was selected by PAGASA based on the National Astronomy Olympiad done nationwide last February 2010. The team sent to China is headed by two team leaders chosen by Dr Cynthia Celebre and they are:

Dr Armando Lee – director of Institute of Astronomy of the Astronomical League of the Philippines

Mr Erick Marmol – a Physics and Earth Scince Teacher of Phil Science High School (Bicol)

This year’s IOAA is participated by 22 countries all over the world and is being hosted by Beijing Planetarium directed by Dr Jin Zhu. Our team’s airfare and pocket money is sponsored by AGHAM Party List Representative Angelo Palmones.

The team will be back in Manila on the evening of the 21st of September. The students in the team are the ff:

Rigel Gomez of Pasig Science High School (NCR)
Christoper Jan Landicho of Phil Science High School (Bicol)
Kenneth Amthony Roquid of Phil Science High School (Bicol)
Gerico Sy of Phil Science High School (Davao)
Rommel Flora of Rizal Science High School (Binangonan Rizal)

Win or lose let us support the team. In their best behavior and best spirit, they will represent our country in this grand meeting of the world’s finest high school amateur astronomers and astrophysics enthusiasts!
