My Totality Experience

The total solar eclipse on July 22, 2009 has  longest totality in the 21st century. It was also my first totality experience.  Nothing can exactly describe or even measure that surreal moment.

Best part of all, I saw this phenomenon with my colleagues in U.P. Astronomical Society.  We went all the way to China just to observe and document this rare event. The clouds prevented us from seeing the totality but nature has its way for us to “feel” the totality. Darkness and temperature drop enveloped us for 5 minutes and 58 seconds. Together, we experienced the most unforgettable total solar eclipse of our lifetime.

To give you an idea of this experience, here’s a video taken by Kin Enriquez during the totality:

I will surely miss our China adventure. Can’t wait for another eclipse chase! hahaha!

  1. Wow! I envy your experience. Too bad for the clouds though. Back here, we had good weather but we lack the proper viewing equipment.

  2. The 1955 eclipse was in the 20th century, so technically the eclipse you saw was the longest in the 21st century. The 2132 eclipse will already be part of the 22nd century. So there’s approximately one long eclipse per century.
